The Solicitors’ Disciplinary
Tribunal
The Solicitors’ Disciplinary Tribunal adjudicates in disciplinary
proceedings relating to solicitors. Its members, who are appointed
by the Master of the Rolls, include solicitor members, who must
be solicitors of at least ten years’ standing, and lay
members, who are neither solicitors nor barristers. The President
of the Tribunal is a solicitor member. The quorum for the Tribunal
is three, including at least one lay member, but the solicitor
members at any sitting must exceed in number the lay members.
The Tribunal has power to strike the name of a solicitor off
the roll, suspend ham temporarily from practice, or impose a
fine. There is a right of appeal to a Divisional Court of the
Queen’s Bench Division and thence, with the leave of the
court, to the Court of Appeal.
