Ecclesiastical courts

For ecclesiastical purposes the country is divided into the Provinces of Canterbury and York, presided over by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York respectively, with the provinces being further divided into dioceses, each diocese having its own bishop.

Each diocese has a consistory court which deals with allegations of misconduct and breach of duty, the court being presided over by a Chancellor. An exception is the diocese of Canterbury, which has instead a Commissary Court presided over by a Commissary General.
Each province has a provincial court, that for Canterbury being known as the Arches Court of Canterbury, which is presided over by the Dean of Arches, and that for York being as the Chancery of York, which is presided over by the Auditor. From a consistory court appeal lies to the provincial court, and from the provincial courts to the Judicial Committee of the Privvy Council.
Jurisdiction over bishops and archbishops is exercised by Commissions of Convocation.
There is also a Court of Ecclesiastical Causes Reserved, which is responsible for any dispute relating to doctrine, ritual, or ceremonial.
From these two courts appeal lies to a Commission of Review consisting of two Law Lords and two Lords Spiritual, that is, archbishops and bishops who have seats in the House of Lords.
The foregoing applies to the Church of England only. English law does not recognise any bodies which have jurisdiction over other Christian denominations or religions other than Christianity.
