The Attorney-General and the Solicitor-General.

The Law Officers of the Crown are the Attorney-General and the Solicitor-General.

The Attorney-General.
The Attorney-General is a barrister and a member of the government, but not of the Cabinet. By tradition he does not take part in political matters, except to the extent that some judicial matters within his province necessarily have political overtones. The main duties and powers of the Attorney-General are as follows:
-He advises the government on matters of law.
-He conducts civil proceedings, particularly in revenue matters, on behalf of the Crown.
-He leads for the Crown in important criminal prosecutions.
-His consent is required before certain types of proceedings, for example, prosecutions under the Official Secrets Act, can be commenced.
-He can stop a trial on indictment by entering a nolle porsequi, that is, a direction to discontinue the proceedings.
-He supervises the work of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
-By virtue of his office he is leader of the Bar and he presides at its general meetings.

The Solicitor-General.
The office of Solicitor-General, like that of Attorney-General, is political. The Solicitor-General, despite his title, is always a barrister. His main practical function is to act as assistant to the Attorney-General and he can exercise all the functions of the Attorney-General if the latter is ill or for any other reason cannot carry out his duties. The Solicitor-General also deputises if for any reason the office of Attorney-General is vacant.
