First introduced under the Powers of Criminal Courts Act 1973,
an offender aged seventeen or over who has committed an offence
punishable by imprisonment may, if he consents, be made subject
to a community service order. Under such an order he must do
between 40 and 240 hours of useful work for the community, the
work to be completed within one year.
The work can vary from painting school railings and clearing rubbish to helping out in charity shops - whatever is deemed appropriate for the community
This punishment had been
found particularly appropriate for ‘football hooligans’,
the timing of their community work being fixed to coincide with
the times of football matches which they might otherwise attend.
