Since the abolition of the death penalty for murder in the UK,
this punishment can now be imposed only of:
-treason;
-piracy with violence;
-setting fire to Her Majesty’s ships or arsenals.
It is inconceivable that the sentence would in fact be executed
in respect of the latter two offences. Treason can be committed
only in time of war (technically, the intentional killing of
the Queen in time of peace is treason but it would in fact be
treated as murder) and it is therefore highly unlikely that
the sentence of death will ever be carried out in the future.
The death penalty cannot be imposed on a person under the age
of eighteen.
