Solicitors
The Law Society was founded in 1825. Its governing body is
the Council of the Society, under a President who is elected
annually.
The Law Society
The Law Society performs a variety of functions:
With the concurrence of the Lord Chancellor, the Lord Chief
Justice, and the Master of the Rolls, it makes regulations
regarding the education and training of prospective solicitors.
-It issues the certificates of satisfaction that prospective
solicitors require for admission.
-It keeps the roll of solicitors.
-It issues practising certificates to solicitors whose names
have been entered on the roll and who wish to practise.
-With the concurrence of the Master of the Rolls, its Council
makes rules regarding the professional conduct of solicitors.
-In certain circumstances it may intervene in a solicitor’s
practice to rescue the business of the client.
-It runs a compensation fund for the victims of certain wrongful
acts and defaults by solicitors.
-It supervises the charges made by solicitors for their work.
-It deals with complaints about solicitors made by members
of the public through a department under the control of its
Professional Purposes Committee. After investigation of the
complaint the Society may refer it to the Solicitors’
Disciplinary Tribunal, refuse or impose conditions on the
solicitor’s next practising certificate, or intervene
directly in the solicitor’s practice. Lay observers,
that is, people who are neither solicitors nor barristers,
are appointed by the Lord Chancellor to oversee the way in
which the Society carries out its investigations.
